Makeup Looks
Her makeup makes her look like a raccoon! Seriously. One of my relatives has blond hair and a very fair complexion. She puts on her eyeliner makeup (upper AND lower lids) so thick and heavy that it actually makes her look like a raccoon with a bad makeup job. Doesn't she notice? Like.....look in the mirror. I swear King Tut's eyeliner makeup job was not as wide and thick. Honestly, it's embarrassing.
A business acquaintance wears her foundation so thick. It's like pancake makeup for the stage, except she's never on stage! The color is not even close to her skin color either. Some days I guess she gets in a big hurry and doesn't quite make it all the way down her neckline. It just stops mid-neck with zero blending. Talk about weird looks. This person's look is totally made up and I'd never seen her without her makeup......until. Yes, we were away at a business conference and had some down time. Without each other knowing it, we both hit the gym for a workout before meeting up for that typical lengthy business dinner. I walked right past her without even a hint of recognition when she spoke to me. I recognized her voice but not her face. I'm sure the shock registered on my face. This person used makeup to completely alter their look, which was just fine on its own.
Makeup Training
The above two instances are real. Where did they learn to apply makeup like this? My bet is that THEY DIDN'T! Nobody taught them how to do that. They learned on their own and thought it was good. And over the years neither has changed their makeup regimen. They still look ridiculous!
So, get some training. These days there is absolutely no excuse for not learning to properly apply makeup for both daytime and evening as well as a variety of different occasions within each. First, you have YouTube. Some of the videos there are humorous. But some are really good and teach you great techniques for applying makeup.
Then there are all sorts of books on beauty. Visit your bookstore or check out online bookstores to see what's available.
My Favorite Makeup Tip
Along the same lines as training, you can do what I did. My girls would never take my word for how to apply their makeup! Chances are, if you have children, yours are the same. Somehow parents are just stupid in these areas, right?! So my solution was simple. I took them to the Bobbi Brown counter at Neiman Marcus and let THEM teach the girls. I did purchase a few things for them but had called prior to our visit to make some arrangements. I decided to start them young as the peer pressure began to mount. I told the specialist what I was up to and made an appointment. I also told them that I wanted to start simple and that they should talk about skin care and not just makeup. But that my primary motive was to teach my girls the proper procedures for applying age-specific makeup.
Let me just tell you.....IT WORKED! My girls were teaching their friends and before I knew it they were going back to that store with others in tow to "shop." The girls that used to set the tone for ridiculous makeup were now in the minority and were the ones being called out for now getting educated. Don't you just love it!
Okay, enough already. Learning from professionals is not just for kids. I let them do a makeup refresher course for me, too....more than once!
